What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are small sturdy titanium or ceramic screw devices that are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are surgically implanted into the upper or lower jawbone in the area of the missing tooth, as a replacement for the natural root of your tooth, providing a solid base for the artificial tooth replacement. After a healing period, they are fitted with a dental crown or bridge, thereby completing the restoration. Dental implants are the closest restoration to your natural teeth, and they allow you to enjoy many of the foods you have missed out on.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are ideal for people who are missing some or all of their teeth. They can be used individually, or to support a number of dental prostheses, including implant-supported bridges and dentures. They are also used for patients who have dentures in order to improve the fit when there are concerns about inadequate bone level, causing an improper fit, pain and irritation to the gum tissues, and the need for the use of denture adhesives. Dental implant-supported dentures “clip” into the dental implants, providing a more secure fit.

Dental implants look, feel, and function like your natural teeth, enabling you to smile, speak, and eat with confidence.

What are some of the advantages of dental implants?

  • Natural tooth appearance
  • Conserves surrounding teeth
  • Conserves bone structure and density
  • Reliable
  • Permanent and easy to care for
  • Long lasting – with regular care, they can last a lifetime
  • Strong, stable, and durable
  • Helps prevent cavities – since they are cavity proof, your smile is no longer as vulnerable to tooth decay.

What does getting dental implants involve?

The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months. Firstly, X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself into the bone for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time.

After several weeks of healing, the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Because several fittings may be required, this step may take one to two months to complete. After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.

You will receive care instructions when your treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant.

Are Dental Implants Right for Everyone?

Dental implants are not for everyone. You must have enough healthy jawbone structure left to support the implant properly, or you may require a bone graft to accept the procedure. Healthy gum tissue that is free of periodontal disease is also important, in order for your dental implant treatment to be successful. Even if you have implants created to replace all of your teeth, it will still be necessary to brush and floss for oral hygiene, as well as maintain your regular dental hygiene visits. This will ensure that there are no food particles or plaque left behind in your mouth to cause gum disease, bad breath, or to compromise the health of the surrounding teeth. With this little bit of regular care, your implants can last a lifetime.

We know that replacing missing teeth with a high functioning restoration solution is important to you. It is our goal at Grace Family Dental to provide you with dental implant restoration that is long-lasting, looks completely natural and functions normally.
